Ramadan Hilal 1440 Notice

Dear Brothers/Sisters in Islam,

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullai Wa Barakatuh.

The Prophet (ﷺ) as said: ‏ “‏ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمِّيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعَدَدَ ‏”‏/ Meaning: “Fast on sighting it (the crescent moon) and break (fast) on sighting it (the crescent moon), but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number (of thirty)” [Muslim  Book 13, Hadith 21] https://sunnah.com/muslim/13/21
The York Mosque Committee had a meeting last Monday 29/4/2019 to review the method of starting the month of Ramadan this year. The committee has decided to consider local/regional moon sighting reports as being closest to the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) and accordingly the 29th Shaban 1440 will be on Sunday 5th May 2019 when we shall be looking for the Ramadan Hilal in the UK, InshaAllah.
We have requested the York Astronomical Society to help us locate the moon and a few of us will be visiting their dedicated Crescent Moon Watch location just outside York (about 10 mins drive from the masjid). If the moon is sighted on Sunday night, then we will begin Ramadan from Monday 6th May 2019 and if it is not sighted, then we shall complete Shaban as 30-days and begin Ramadan from Tuesday 7th May 2019, InshaAllah.
We will let you know of the local moon sighting results after Isha Jamaat on Sunday, InshaAllah. If anyone wishes to join the local observer team, please inform Dr Assad Khan (or Imam Abid Salik) of your intention.
JazakAllahu Khaira,
York Mosque Management Team
